International Historical Educational Charitable and Human Rights Society «Memorial» (International Memorial) is a non-commercial organisation studying political repressions in the USSR and present-day Russia, promoting moral and legal rehabilitation of persons subjected to political repressions.
Aims and objectives of International Memorial:
- promoting the establishment of a well-developed civil society and democratic state respecting the rule of law and excluding the possibility of reverting to totalitarianism;
- involvement in shaping public awareness on the basis of democracy and law values, overcoming of totalitarian stereotypes and asserting the rights of individuals in political practice and social life;
- contributing to restoring historical truth and perpetuating memory of the victims of totalitarian regime repressions.
Memorial is not only about researchers and human rights activists, it also includes the largest archive in Russia on the history of Soviet repressions, a specialized library and a museum collection of objects from the Gulag.
