Project objectives

The aim of the project is to enable young people to independently research the sites of mass extermination in Trostenets using digital applications, and to develop historical thinking by looking at different narratives and memory cultures.

Project description

From January 2021 to May 2022, students from Belarus, Austria and Germany worked within the framework of the program "Young people remember" (Jugend Erinnert) on the possibilities of presenting the Trostenets death camp in a transnational context with the help of digital technologies. The project "Virtual tour for multi-perspective study of the memorial place of  Maly Trostenets" was supported by the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future".

Project outcomes

Students from Minsk, Osnabrück and Vienna, led by Alexander Dalhouski (Leonid Levin Historical Workshop, Minsk), Prof. Dr. Christoph Rass (University of Osnabrück), Prof. Dr. Kerstin von Lingen and Prof. Dr. Claudia Thoine (University of Vienna), developed a joint transnational perspective on the extermination site in Trostenets and its culture of remembrance in training sessions and interactive workshops over the course of two years. As a result, six virtual exhibitions were created and based on them two virtual tours of the Trostenets memorial complex were developed in Belarusian, Russian, German and English, which can be downloaded for free in the mobile application izi.travel or DigiWalk at the following links:
