Open call for the Second international historical hachathon #hack4history in Minsk

The international hackathon #hack4history will take place for the second time in Minsk from 14 to 16 November 2020. Teams of historians, teachers, museum employees, NGO representatives, journalists, students, designers and IT experts from Germany, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus can participate.  

The goal of the hackathon #hack4history will be to develop new digital products and IT solutions for the usage in the historical education, memory culture and the popularization of remembrance sites and museums on the Second World War. For 48 hours the teams will develop digital history products concerning a place, an event, or another topic.

How will the hackathon take place?

#hack4history will start on the 14 November 2020 with a “Get together” and presentations of project ideas. Teams will present shortly their ideas on memory culture and multiple perspectivity about the Second World War and then start to work on their prototypes for 48-hours. 

In those two days around 30 participants will work together with experts and specialists in design, programming, project management and PR. In the end teams will present their prototypes (apps, websites, games, multimedia-projects etc.). 

A jury will select three winner teams who will receive financial support (up to 2000 Euro) to finish their projects. Until December winning teams will work with experts and finalize their products which will be published on the Digital History Network website  and presented in January 2021 (probably during an online-event). 

Who can participate? 

We encourage teams of 2-4 people to apply for #hack4history. Teams shall consist of young historians, museum employees, NGO representatives from Germany, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. Teams with IT experts and designers, as team members are preferably selected.

How to apply? 

Applications for the hackathon will be chosen from an open call. If you want to participate, please fill out the form until 25th October 2020. 

Terms of participation:

Teams from Russia, Ukraine, Germany and Poland will take part online.

The organizers cover travel expenses and accommodation in Minsk (in double rooms) for participants from Belarus.

 Working languages of the #hack4history are Russian and English (with translation provided).

Covid-19 information:

Due to the complicated world situation, it is difficult to make long term plans, when it comes to international events. Therefore, we do not exclude the possibility of changing the format of the hackathon to an online format. We will communicate all possible changes with you and promise to make everything possible to maintain your safety and health.
