Online course "Memory Culture from the inside: How do we remember the Second World War in Belarus, Germany, Ukraine, Poland and Russia"

You want to learn more about the narratives on the Second World War from other countries and travel virtually to different places of remembrance? You want to meet colleagues from abroad and exchange experience, get to know new tools and approaches in digital history education?

If the answer is yes, then take part in our online course “Memory Culture from the inside: How do we remember the Second World War in Belarus, Germany, Ukraine, Poland and Russia”.

IBB Dortmund, IBB Minsk and its partners invite representatives from NGOs, historians, journalists and museum workers to start a dialogue on memory culture and multiperspectivity and to discover the newest approaches in history work among colleagues from Germany, Poland, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

The online course will take place from 30 November till 4 December 2020. Young historians, museum employees, journalists and other multiplicators interested in memory culture are eligible to participate.

Goals: participants of the online course get to know methods of multiperspective historical educational work, travel to memorial sites and museums virtually and discuss them with experts as well as establish professional contacts with potential partners from Eastern Europe.

What can you expect from the course?

  • During the online trip you will meet colleagues from Belarus, Germany, Poland, Russia and Ukraine, and discuss different perspectives and narratives on the Second World War to exchange critical views on sensitive historical topics.
  • You will visit virtually institutions like Trostenets Memorial site in Belarus, Baby Yar in Ukraine and the Museum of the Second World War (tbc) in Poland and discuss new practices of history education with a multi-perspective approach.
  • You will learn how to make podcasts, cartoons and video courses based on historical documents and events and work together in international teams on a small product of your own choice.

What we expect from you?

  • The willingness to deal with unknown or unusual perspectives and approaches and to reflect on your own.
  • The willingness to apply your acquired experience and knowledge in your regular work.
  • We expect the participants to get together into international teams and produce a product during the course (essay, report, multimedia article etc.) which will be published.
  • Participants are expected to be online during all the lectures, tours and workshops. Programme hours will be 09:00-13:30 (CET) / 10:00-14:30 (EET). Only apply if you are available during these times.
